Care Guide
Ping & Bloom Care Guide
Simple, grower-first tips to keep your Pinguiculas thriving.
Bright light β’ Clean water β’ Airy soil β’ Happy pings
π§ Watering
Moist, not soggy β mineral-free water only
Pinguiculas enjoy consistently moist soil, but they should never sit in soggy conditions. The goal is hydration with good airflow.
- Keep soil evenly moist, not waterlogged
- Water when the top layer feels slightly dry
- Use only distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water
- Avoid tap water β minerals can damage roots over time
Tip: Water from the top until excess drains out to refresh oxygen in the substrate.
βοΈ Light
Bright, indirect light for compact growth & color
Bright, indirect light encourages compact growth, vibrant leaf color, and healthy sticky leaves.
- East or north-facing windows work best
- Morning sun is usually safe
- Avoid harsh afternoon sun
- Grow lights are an excellent indoor alternative
Quick read: Pale/stretching leaves = more light. Scorched leaves = less light.
π‘οΈ Temperature
Typical indoor temps are perfect
Pinguiculas thrive in most homes, which makes them great βeasy modeβ carnivorous plants.
Ideal range: 55β80Β°F (13β27Β°C)
- Mexican species prefer warm, stable temperatures year-round
- Temperate species may require a cooler winter dormancy
- Keep away from heaters, AC vents, and cold drafts
- Protect from frost and freezing temperatures
πͺ΄ Soil & Substrate
Low-nutrient, airy, fast-draining mixes only
Pinguiculas require a low-nutrient, fast-draining substrate. Regular potting soil is not suitable and can harm the plant.
There isnβt one βperfectβ mix β what matters most is clean water + airflow + the right moisture balance for your space.
β¨ Ping & Bloom Recommended Mix
Pumice + Peat Moss + Vermiculite
- Balanced moisture retention and airflow
- Beginner-friendly and reliable
- Great for most Mexican Pinguicula
Other Common Options
- Peat Moss + Perlite β holds moisture well; can compact over time
- Lava Rock / Mineral Mixes β excellent drainage; dries faster
- Silica Sand Mixes β compact growth; rinse thoroughly
- Orchid Bark Blends β high airflow; best in warm/humid spaces
Potting Tips
- Use pots with drainage holes
- Shallow pots work best
- Repot every 1β2 years as substrate breaks down
π Feeding & Fertilizer
Let the leaves do the work β never fertilize the soil
Pinguiculas get nutrients naturally from insects caught on their sticky leaves.
- Never fertilize the soil
- Occasional tiny insects are plenty
- Most indoor pings feed themselves over time
πΈ Extra Tips & Troubleshooting
Quick fixes for the most common issues
- Leaves curling or burning β too much light; move to a gentler spot
- Soft/rotting base β too wet or low airflow; improve drainage & reduce water
- Pale growth β increase light gradually
- Seasonal leaf shape changes β normal for many varieties
Ping & Bloom note: Pinguiculas are surprisingly adaptable. A small tweak usually makes a big difference.
